The Birth of Hanes

I knew as soon as I saw Darcie’s name late at night on my call display that it was go time! It was her husband Jordan letting me know she was in labour 4 weeks early and they were in Burnaby (over an hours drive away). I called my mother-in-law to babysit immediately, and hauled my ass to the city!

When I arrived Darcie was already fully dilated and pushing. Watching this woman, so resilient + powerful, withdraw into herself for strength between surges was incredible. As baby’s heart rate dropped and he refused to get into a better position, the decision was made to prep the OR for a cesarean. With the support of her husband, midwife, + sister, she pushed against the clock. Although the anxiety in the room was palpable, Darcie remained fierce + serene, and asked her sister to say a prayer before her final push. When it was finally time to go to the operating room, even between the surges and chaos, she still smiled.

And then Hanes Samuel August Cromarty was delivered into the world. All 6 lbs 12 oz of fuzzy squishiness! As mama rested, her sister and I followed Jordan + Hanes to the quiet and peaceful NICU where they snuggled skin to skin for the first time. Because of his early arrival, Hanes was monitored there for a few hours to ensure he was healthy + happy.

When he was finally reunited with his mama, the tears flowed. It was so beautiful to witness the pure love that poured from her heart, and her sweet relief as she held her healthy baby boy. Together at last.

I am eternally grateful that I was invited to capture the birth of Hanes, and Darcie’s transition into motherhood. Even in her most vulnerable stage she exuded strength + resilience, and I will forever remember how amazing + badass she is.
